There’s something about the beginning of a new academic year that makes you want to completely reinvent your life.
New notebooks.
A fresh timetable.
A new podcast for walking to school.
Suddenly you’re convinced you’re going to wake up at 6am every morning, drink a glass of water, have the most productive breakfast, arrive at school early, never forget a homework deadline and somehow keep your room clean all year.
…and then September actually arrives 😬
Suddenly you arrive at school with your computer at only 10%, your bag is somehow missing the calculator you definitely packed last night and you’re eating breakfast in the car (or sometimes even skipping it)!
But honestly?
I think there’s something really lovely about a new academic year.
It’s one of those rare moments where you genuinely get to press reset.
You might be going into a completely new school year, starting new subjects, meeting new people, moving into a new year group or simply wanting to feel a little more organised than you did last year.
And you don’t need to become a completely different person to make it your best year yet.
You just need a few little systems, some realistic goals and a reason to actually be excited about what’s ahead.
So whether you’re the girl who has already bought her stationery or the girl who is currently reading this while pretending September doesn’t exist...
this one’s for you. 🎀
POLL
START WITH A RESET, NOT A REINVENTION 🫧
Before you start planning your entire academic year, take a minute to think about the one you’ve just finished.
What worked?
What absolutely did not work?
What do you wish you’d done differently?
And, perhaps most importantly, what do you actually want this year to feel like?
Because I think we sometimes make the mistake of thinking that a “fresh start” means completely changing ourselves - new personality, new wardrobe, new routine, new everything. But you don’t need to become a different person.
Maybe last year you constantly left revision until the night before or you were always losing pieces of paper. Maybe you said yes to everything and ended up completely overwhelmed or you didn’t spend enough time doing things you actually enjoyed.
Those are things you can change without changing you.
Think of September as an opportunity to keep the things you loved about yourself while leaving behind a few habits that weren’t helping you.
You don’t need a dramatic transformation.
Sometimes the best reset is simply deciding:
“Okay. I know what didn’t work last time. I’m going to try something different.”
And that’s enough.
CREATE YOUR “ACADEMIC YEAR VISION” 🎀
I know “vision board” can sound slightly satire...
But hear me out.
Instead of only setting academic goals like get better grades or revise more, think about the bigger picture.
What do you want your everyday life to look like?
Maybe you want to feel more confident speaking in class or maybe you want to actually understand your subjects instead of memorising everything the night before. Maybe you want to join a club or maybe you want to make more memories with your friends. Maybe you want to finally start that hobby you’ve been talking about for approximately three years or maybe you simply want to feel more calm and in control.
Write everything down.
You could even make a little Pinterest board for your academic year with pictures of stationery, study spaces, outfits, books, places you want to visit and little reminders of what you’re working towards.
Not because your life needs to look exactly like a Pinterest board but because sometimes seeing what you’re excited about makes your goals feel a little more real.
And please don’t make your entire vision board about grades.
Your academic year is going to contain so much more than exams and homework.
GET YOUR LIFE TOGETHER BEFORE SEPTEMBER
Okay… this is your sign to stop leaving everything until the night before.
